UCSC Reunion Weekend 2009

Friday, April 24 through Sunday, April 26

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Reunion Weekend 2009 kicked off on Friday night with a packed house at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz to hear Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Intellectual Forum address.

On Saturday, the UCSC Alumni Association Awards for 2009 were presented, and a host of more than 40 events took place across campus.

At the first ever All Alumni Reunion Picnic hundreds of alumni and friends gathered to reconnect with each other and celebrate the contribution made by graduates celebrating their 5- through 40-year reunions who donated more than $745,000 to the school's annual Reunion Weekend fundraising drive, far exceeding the campus's goal.

Pioneer Class members and Young Alumni alike responded to the reunion weekend theme of “Our Environmental Destiny” that resonated throughout.

Thanks to all who joined to make this a wonderful gathering of UC Santa Cruz alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends!

Last year's Reunion Weekend highlights
April 24-26, 2008

If you were among the hundreds of alumni and friends who returned to UCSC in April for Reunion Weekend, thanks for coming! We hope you enjoyed reconnecting with fellow UCSC grads, faculty, and students.

A webcast of our first-ever Reunion Weekend Intellectual Forum, on innovation and education in a global society, is now available; click here. The lecture, panel, and discussion featured "Innovation Nation" author John Kao, 2007 National Humanities Award winner Victor Davis Hanson (Cowell ’75), and Silicon Valley leader Shellye Archambeau, and was moderated by New York Times senior editor Katy Roberts (Kresge ’74).

Forum

A webcast of Nurturing Green Entrepreneurs: A Conversation is also available; click here. This event was hosted by College Eight Provost Ravi Rajan and featured Sunil Paul (founder, Spring Ventures), Reid Hoffman (founder, LinkedIn), and Nick Ellis (Bright Green Talent), and was the kick off for the 35th anniversary celebrations at College Eight. Thank you to all donors to this year's UCSC Reunion Class Challenge. Alumni celebrating five- through 40-year reunions have donated more than $305,000 in 2007-08, nearly double last year. If you haven't yet participated, we welcome your reunion gift here.

Check out the Reunion Weekend 2008 web photo gallery here.

We welcome your suggestions for future reunions events. Give us your input here.

We hope you'll plan to join us next spring for Reunion Weekend, planned for April 24, 2010.

Help create the reunion YOU want to attend in 2009!

Here's how: Reconnect. Go to the UCSC Online Alumni Directory, and invite your friends and classmates to join you in returning to campus for your reunion in April. Reminisce. Search your photo albums, shoeboxes, and other dark corners for pictures and other memorabilia from your days at UCSC. Contact the Alumni Association and share your ideas for the reunion you'd like to attend; then volunteer to help make it happen (see article below). Contact Assistant Director Lynn Zachreson at lynnz@ucsc.edu, or call toll-free to (800) 933-SLUG, or locally, (831) 459-2530.

Consider making a reunion gift. This coming fall, UCSC students from the Telephone Outreach Program will be contacting you and your classmates. How did UCSC change your world? How is that important to the world today? Your reunion gift will make a difference to today's students at UCSC. You can give today at http://giveto.ucsc.edu/We look forward to seeing you in Santa Cruz this April.

Why attend a reunion?

"It was not nostalgia. It was curiosity. I wanted to find out who all those people who I had known so long ago had become. At a reunion, you discover that there are people you barely remember, or who weren't on your radar screen at all when you were in college, and they've become amazingly interesting while you weren't looking."

-Betsy Buchalter Adler (Cowell '70), who attended the 1999 reunion of UCSC's Pioneer Class

Pioneer Class reunion organizer Betsy Adler once said that organizing a reunion can be "a burden or a pleasure, depending on the level of staff support and on the nature of your fellow volunteers. Cowell and the Alumni Association were a great help to us. With staff support and e-mail, it's do-able." Once someone proposes a reunion idea, Alumni Association Assistant Director Lynn Zachreson will help in every way she can. "If you can imagine the reunion you'd like to attend, a simple phone call to the Alumni Association can make it a reality," she said. Zachreson helps people put together a committee of like-minded volunteer reunion planners. She publicizes the reunion on the web and in print to reach out to potential participants, helps locate an event site and caterer, provides organizers with seed funding and mailing lists, produces and mails invitations, recommends local overnight accommodations, takes reservations for alumni events, and more. Almost all reunions take place during Reunion Weekend. To become a reunion volunteer, contact Lynn Zachreson toll-free at (800) 933-SLUG or via e-mail at lynnz@ucsc.edu.
